The Ancients did not leave behind a decoding key or perhaps we just haven't found it. This is an important reason why archeologists ask us not to remove or deface petroglyphs, nor dig in ancient sites. If such a key could be found, it would benefit us all.

Part 1: What was I thinking?

This is the question I asked myself more than once while I battled the clock and my own exhaustion to produce an entire comic book in a day. Why try to do it? Well, Scott McCloud promised that it was some kind or rite of passage, that it would change you, make you a new man. He came up with the 24 hour comic dare to try to improve his friend's speed, a friend who could draw like the wind when there wasn't a deadline looming, when just sketching for fans. I suppose I was hoping this challenge would force me to abandon my inhibitions, the ones that had kept me from completing a comic book until then. My drawing speed isn't a problem, but the decibel level of my inner critic is, so he had to take a break on the first day of February, 2003, if I was to get this thing done. I even postponed the start time for a few hours, clutching that critic, not wanting to let go. And once I did, there was a wave of fear, like the net below my high-wire act was taken away, leaving nothing to catch me. I had to produce, and I did...eventually.
